PSi Update – Gearing up for Junior Nationals
This year the U11 and U12 Nationals features a combined sixty teams that will descend on Cape Town, the perfect backdrop for a tournament of this nature. It will be the first year that there is also an A and B section for all four sections of the Nationals once again underlining the incredible growth of PSi in just the third year of the Junior Nationals.
The U11 boys section has risen from 12 teams in 2015 to an incredible 16 teams for this year. The A section sees the Gryphons join in while sending their B team into the B Division. Boland franchise, the Wild Cats, join the Foxes and Scorpions in the tournament, showing great growth in indoor hockey in the region. The Swartland Spiders, a new team in 2015 owned by South African national player Wade Paton, will make their debut in the U11 boy’s tournament, joined by the Southern Cape Sables who impressed last year. The pressure will be on the Hawks this year as they look to once again take control of the A section Franchise competition and defend their crown.
The under 11 girl’s tournament, which delivers hockey at an incredible level for the age group, has also upsized this year growing from 11 teams competing in 2015 to include a further two and split into two divisions. The Durban Panthers join the division after missing out in 2015 and new inclusions from the Sunbirds and Stingrays further strengthen the competition. Last year the Hawks won this division with one of the most dominant displays seen in PSi history and many will watch with a keen eye to see if the 2016 crop can follow suite.
The Under 12 girl’s tournament also goes two tiered this year with the inclusion of just one team to take the total to 13 teams. The Hawks last year underlined their domination with 3 gold medals and their ladies will be the favourites to take the title again this year. They will face incredible competition from the Western Cape rivals in the Foxes and Seals but it promises to be possibly the most exciting tournament.
The under 12 boys, arguably the premier tournament of this nationals, once again features two divisions but this year an incredible 18 teams. The Magnificent Mambas, winner of B Section franchise of the year in 2015, will take on the A section for the first time and this is an exciting prospect. The Lowveld hockey has grown remarkably over the past 18 months and I can’t wait to see them in action. The Pitbulls have joined in having not participated in 2015 along with the Spiders in their first Junior Nationals.
With just a couple of days to go, here is the pertinent information. The Tournament will start on Thursday, 30 June with the Opening Ceremony which will be held at the Bellville Velodrome. The Ceremony will commence at 4pm followed by the SA Men’s Indoor side taking on the International All-Stars, including South African field hockey captain Austin Smith, in the first of the three match series.
