Five Reasons to get down and watch the SA vs. Ireland Test Series

By December 7, 2019 No Comments

The SPAR South Africa ladies and the Ireland Indoor Hockey Ladies continue their series tonight at the Belville Velodrome after two tight 2-1 results in the opening tests in Durban. The matches are streamed live on, but here are five great reasons to get down to the Velodrome and watch the action.

SPAR South Africa undefeated run

The SPAR South Africa ladies have played 50 matches since the last African indoor Cup in Swakopmund. In that time, they have lost only three matches. As they come into tonight’s game, they are on the back of a 16-match unbeaten run that includes just 2 draws and 14 wins. The rankings in Indoor Hockey are based on tournaments, but if they were based on test matches, we would be watching a top 10 team at their peak.

Its Ireland’s return to Indoor Hockey

1990 was the last time that Ireland played an Indoor hockey test match before this. After 29 years and some cool highlights the Pro Series Indoor launch was part of a movement that saw the national Irish teams re-establish their place on International courts. This is something historic, sensational and just downright awesome.

The Belville Velodrome

One of the finest venues in South Africa, the Velodrome has played host to several concerts and events. Last week it was the home of the Netball series between South Africa and England. But the netball has left, and Psi arrived. The Hockey court is there and as we saw on the opening night the Velodrome is arguably the finest venue when packed. The atmosphere is second to none.

Kayla de Waal

A little over a year ago Kayla de Waal was playing in the PSi Nationals for the Cape Seals. Fast forward to today and she will be playing her 9thtest match tonight having opened her account against Switzerland last month. The youngster is adapting to International Indoor hockey extremely well and quickly and offers the current PSi players the excitement of knowing there is opportunity ahead for them

Cyril the Squirrel

Is there a better mascot in world sport? Mr. Met and Phillie Phanatic probably come close, but in truth its only a competition if Cyril says it is. The loveable Squirrel is a fan favourite from U9 all the way to 99 and he will be strutting his stuff in the way only Cyril knows how. Don’t miss out!
