Pro Series Indoor has a remarkable history of making dreams come true and the first ever European trip for the Africa All-Stars managed to tick that box once again. At the 2018 Pro Series Indoor Nationals the U14 and U16 All Star squads were selected and in January this year they headed over to Germany and Holland for an unforgettable trip.
The selected players who included the likes of Blake Martin, Bonolo Moabi, Fagan Hansen, Kristy Leonard and John Paul Britz amongst others, were joined by the exceptional management squad of Cameron Mackay, Johannes Weyhe, Trevor Cormack, Ruan Oosthuizen, Etienne Van Den Brink, Lee-Ann Persse and Ross Willis.
The tour started when the team met in Frankfurt and the captains were announced. For the U15 Girls it was Azaylee Philander, U17 Girls Danja Meyer, U15 Boys JP Britz and U17 boys David Britz. After a bit of tourism time the teams headed out to watch Blau-Weiß Köln take on Rot-Weiss Köln before the U17 sides took on Blau-Weiß Köln in the afternoon.
The following day the girls started the morning off with a training session at Rot-Weiss Köln with German coaches, while the boys spent some time at the home of FC Köln. In the afternoon all four sides took on Bonn Hockey Club.
After a good day of hockey, the teams were able to explore Cologne the following day with an absolute highlight of the trip being the Cologne Cathedral. The climbing of 533 steps to the top of the cathedral almost symbolic in the climb of African Indoor Hockey onto the world map.
The next set of fixtures saw the U15 boys and girls as well as the U17 boys take on Crefelder Hockey Club in a thrilling afternoon of indoor hockey action. The culture of hockey in Europe a complete eye opener for our African stars.
The tour moved to arguably the home of hockey next as the teams moved to Holland in Maastricht, with all four sides in action that night at the Tilburg Dome. For the Africa All-Stars there will be few hockey highlights as splendid as donning the Red and Blue in the wonderful hockey facility of Tilburg.
Next on the adventure was one of the most famous hockey clubs in the World and home of PSi legends Teun Rohof, Nicki Leijis and of course Robert Tigges, Hockey Club Amsterdam! The teams were put through their paces by the wonderful Tim Broenik and later games against Hurley and Cartouche. With more games the following night against Amsterdam to wrap up the tour.
A special shout-out to Dennis our bus driver, Travel and Sport, Field Hockey Travel, Tayla Sportswear and all the parents for making our first ever PSi Africa All Stars tour to Europe a massive success!
